Samsung BD-P2550

Samsung’s BD-P2550 Blu-ray player aims to raise the bar for Blu-ray players. It is one of the first to feature Netflix and Pandora Streaming video, high definition video at that. And with the cost of Blu-ray players falling quickly, this player is sure to be among the most popular out there.

The Samsung BD-P2550, like most Blu-ray players, features an all black chassis. At first glance, it looks pretty simple. There are only a few visible buttons and the disc loading tray that standout. Turn the unit on and the display appears beneath the part of the black exterior.

Standout Features

• Profile 2.0

• DVD upconversion

• Onboard Dolby TrueHD

• 1 GB internal memory

• Netflix and Pandora

Features

The Samsung BD-P2550 is the latest in the line of Profile 2.0 compatible players. Profile 2.0, or BD-Live, allows the player to access content from the internet to enhance the viewing experience. It’s sort of like a bonus disc, without the disc. The use of Profile 2.0 does require the player to be connected to the internet via the Ethernet adapter.

The Samsung BD-P2550 will take any standard DVD and upconvert it to 1080p resolution. Now you can watch all your movies in the same resolution that you watch your Blu-ray movies.

With onboard Dolby TrueHD the Samsung BD-P2550 is able to decode the latest in audio from your Blu-ray discs. This enables you to hear the movie the way it was intended. Even if you have a receiver without the ability to process Dolby TrueHD, the Samsung BD-P2550 has discreet 7.1 audio outputs, which would bypass any decoding required by the receiver.

There are many Blu-ray players that are Profile 2.0 compliant. What you don’t know is that most of these players require a separate memory card to be able to use the features associated with BD-Live. The Samsung BD-P2550 has 1 GB of internal memory so you don’t have to insert a memory card every time you want to view the additional content.

With streaming video services like Netflix and Pandora, you should never be heard saying there is nothing to watch. Now you can have a whole library of movie selections right at your fingertips. You can even stream them in high definition.

Summary of Reviews

The expert reviewers liked the abundance of features offered on the Samsung BD-P2550. The image quality on Blu-ray discs was outstanding. It has the ability to decode both Dolby True HD and DTS-HD for the latest in surround sound technology. The included 1 GB of internal memory also made it easier to access BD-Live content.

User reviews were also favorable. The setup was easy and getting connected to Netflix was easier than expected. The picture quality was described as “very good.” Most of the users who purchased this would recommend it to a friend.

Summary

The Samsung BD-P2550 combines a host of nice features into a machine that is very competitively priced. If you are looking for a do-it-all player, the Samsung BD-P2550 is a solid choice.

One of the main criticisms against Blu-ray is that the technology just doesn't offer much of an advantage over DVD. While we'd argue that the superior image quality can be worth it, we'd agree that many of the other features, such as BD-Live or animate
